What is Rainmeter? How to Customize your Desktop with Rainmeter

Today we will take a look at Rainmeter! I have posted many community-made skins and themes for rainmeter on this website, but I had a feeling that I should also do some tutorial and explanation of what Rainmeter actually is. So, in this post, we will take a look at what is rainmeter, how to use it, what are the effects of using it on gaming and daily use, who should use it and more! What is Rainmeter?

Rainmeter is a lightweight application for customizing your Windows desktop. Rainmeter works by installing community made ‘skins’, many of which can change how the desktop works with widgets like app launchers, RSS and email readers, calendars, weather reports, and many others. It has been around since Windows XP, where it was used as a tool for displaying basic info on the desktop, but has since gained a large community following which has produced high quality skins which can change the whole desktop experience.

How to use it?

Well, its pretty straight forward really. You just download the latest version of Rainmeter from their official website. You should get a setup file which shouldn’t need any detailed instructions to proceed with. Once you have it installed, you can start by unloading the default skins, which will appear as installation finishes. To do that, you just need to right-click on any of the skins you see on desktop, and click Unload skin. You can do the same for all the skins which you don’t need! Now you can get some cool skins online (check these), and there are a ton of skins to choose from, many of which have a video tutorial to guide you through the process. That’s it, you now have your customized desktop!

Should you use Rainmeter?

Okay, now this might not be for everyone. Rainmeter is for people who want to customize their personal computers. Since there is a variety of skins available, you can easily find ones that suit you. Don’t worry, you can change the skins, and also remove Rainmeter from your computer, at any time! One last thing according to my personal experience is that, you should be a little familiar with the concept of programming. Rainmeter doesn’t ask you to build your own skins, but even though, you might need to further customize the skins you download from community sources. If you don’t have any experience, try customizing skins yourself, (if you want to) and you will learn it very quickly!

Does it lower the performance?

A lot of people have been talking about how it impacts the performance of your computer. But, in my experience, i don’t think its much of a deal. If you have a good computer with at least 4GB of RAM and 128MB of VRAM, you are good to go! Even if you think its causing problems, you can easily close rainmeter from the Taskbar icon, and continue with your gaming (or work) to ensure best performance!
